CUHK Organizes Summer School for Mainland Students
Following the success of the first Greater Bay Area Summer School (GBASS) held in 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the second CUHK GBASS in 2021. In 2022, GBASS was renamed Summer School for Mainland Students (SSMS) to expand admission to all partner universities in China’s Mainland and Macao with a greater variety of participation.
SSMS was held from 1 to 12 August 2022, offering five courses where each participant can choose one of five courses. The response for SSMS was overwhelmingly good with nearly 400 applications from 77 mainland universities. Due to the limited quota, 175 students were admitted to SSMS to study and communicate with students from different mainland universities. Participating students enjoyed the summer school and here are some of their experiences sharing:
- Student of Reading Humanity, Liang Fengming of Wuyi University
More than ten days of study, let me have a deeper understanding of “happy life” and “people and society”, and I feel a lot! For example, in the past, I would be too entangled in the uncertainty of the future, and too afraid of the unknown; But now I have a different view: the wheel of time rolls forward, and it is important for us to do a good job in the present, not to be too entangled in the uncertainty of the future.
- Student of Reading Nature, Ye Kaipeng of Renmin University of China
I was most impressed by Aristotle’s Four Causes, because it made me reflect deeply on the subject of classical Greek philosophy, and I hope to have more mature logical thinking in the future. At the same time, Dr. Wu Jun gave students more autonomy and encouraged them to fully discuss and communicate in class, which was complemented by in-depth explanations, enabling me to have the privilege of broadening my academic horizons and having a more successful learning experience.
- Student of Chinese Music, Aesthetics, and Globalization, Yin Shengying of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology
When the teacher lectured the interchange of music aesthetics and globalization, he connected the abstract theory with practical cases in a quite erudite way, which contains both transcultural view and humanistic care, and this becomes the most manifest and unique atmosphere I can feel during my study here.
- Student of Resource Issues in the Age of Globalization, Xue Yidan of Nanjing Forestry University
In the 21st century, globalization is closely related to us. Mastering the scientific development knowledge system and optimizing the allocation of resources plays an indispensable role in the future of individuals and nations. The era needs young talents. Only by seizing opportunities and meeting challenges can we brave the wind and waves in the era of globalization. In the class, attempts of group cooperation have brought me stronger communication skills, organizational skills and leadership skills, and I was deeply impressed by the warm interactions between the professor and the students, as well as the strong academic atmosphere of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
- Student of Understanding Ecotourism, Liu Gengyuan of Jinan University
In Prof. Chan’s class, there has never been a stereotyped teacher nor students, but only a group of people who are eager to learn and communicate with each other. This kind of learning style is a combination of Chinese and the Western makes me memorable. Of course, in addition to experiencing different learning styles, I also enriched my knowledge group and laid a more solid foundation for future research on tourism.
