Greater Bay Area Science Forum Discusses Synergistic Developments




The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted a sub-forum of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum on 12 November 2024. About 200 delegates from Belt and Road countries and the mainland gathered at CUHK to discuss technological innovation and synergistic development. The Sub-Forum on International Organizations and Bay Area Dialogue, themed “Science and Technology Innovation for Synergistic Development” attracted participants including government officials, academicians, university leaders, and entrepreneurs from the region, to exchange views on topics such as biomedical sciences, artificial intelligence, and green energy.
The officiating guests included Professor Rocky S. Tuan, the then Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Professor Bai Chunli, President of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum and former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Mr. Ye Shuiqiu, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR.
Professor Tuan said in his opening remarks: “The Sub-Forum was an important opportunity for researchers and industry leaders to exchange ideas and think about the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a catalyst to turbocharge the growth of the innovation and research ecosystem.” At the forum, leaders and scholars delivered keynote speeches, and reports, and participated in round-table discussions. They also explored possibilities to maximize Hong Kong’s role as a super-connector between the GBA and the global scientific community.
The Greater Bay Area Science Forum, launched by the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO) in 2021, is regarded as the highest-level academic event in the GBA. ANSO, initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, comprises 78 scientific and research organizations from countries and regions worldwide. CUHK is the only founding institution of Hong Kong.
Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Library Concludes Annual Meeting and Young Scholar Forum
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Library organized its 2024 Annual Meeting cum Young Scholar Forum from 26 to 27 November. The event attracted over 90 representatives, experts, and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Mr. Benjamin Meunier, Librarian of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Vice Chairman of the Alliance attended the activities on behalf of the University.
The meeting, themed “The Legacy of Ink and Words: Special Collections Management and Intelligent Services in a New Era,” focused on the preservation, organization, and utilization of special collections in libraries. It aimed to explore innovative paths and solutions for university libraries amid modern developments.
Participants shared their experiences and achievements in building and innovating services related to special collections at their respective university libraries. These discussions provided new perspectives and directions for future collaboration and development among libraries in the Greater Bay Area. Mr. Meunier remarked that the annual meeting together with the forum provided a valuable platform addressing the challenges and opportunities in the open era.
CUHK Attends Annual Meeting of Mainland-Hong Kong-Macau Law Education Alliance
The Mainland-Hong Kong-Macau Law Education Alliance had its 5th Board Meeting cum Seminar from 6 to 7 December 2024. Professor Queenie Lai, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) attended the meeting on behalf of the University as the Vice Chairman of the Alliance. Member universities reviewed the achievements of the Alliance for 2023 and 2024 during the meeting and devised work plans for the coming year.
The Mainland-Hong Kong-Macau Law Education Alliance was established in 2017 to provide a cross-border platform for the profession of law education. Member universities include Tsinghua University, Peking University, Wuhan University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, China University of Political Science and Law, The University of Hong Kong, and The University of Macau. CUHK was one of the founding members and has been the Vice-Chairman since its establishment. With a strong connection with various international professional organizations and institutions, the CUHK Faculty of Law strives to bring together systems of common law and Chinese law with other legal traditions to promote justice and safeguard the rule of law.
CUHK Participates in the Annual Meeting of Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) participated in the 2024 Board Meeting and Annual Forum of the Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance (BHUA) on 10 December at Tsinghua University. The activities gathered representatives from institutions in Beijing and Hong Kong to explore new development opportunities for the Alliance.
Founded in 2018 by CUHK and various local and Beijing universities, BHUA aims at establishing closer linkage and exchange, enhancing talent nurturing and research collaboration, as well as the development of higher education in the two regions. The Alliance has a total of 22 member institutions at present, comprising 8 Hong Kong and 14 Beijing universities.
Invitation to Establish Sub-Alliances under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance
Initiated by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sun Yat-sen University, and the University of Macau, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance (GHMUA) was established in November 2016 as a higher education platform to extend the current efforts of elite universities in promoting academic cooperation in the three regions. The Alliance Board is now calling for applications for the establishment of sub-alliances under GHMUA.
Applications should be submitted to ohmta@mail.sysu.edu.cn by March 31, 2025, with the email subject format “University Name + Sub-Alliance Establishment Proposal” for consideration.
