CUHK and Great Bay University Collaborate in the Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Great Bay University (GBU) joined hands to establish Great Bay University – The Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER) on 26 November 2024. A delegation led by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, the then Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, attended the inauguration ceremony in Dongguan. The CUHK delegation included CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har, Dean of Science Professor Song Chunshan, Associate Dean Professor Wei Tao, and over 20 faculty members and students from the Faculty of Science.
Professor Tuan, in his speech, emphasized that Dongguan and Hong Kong, both key cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), should complement each other’s strengths and pursue shared development to serve the strategic goals of the nation and the GBA. The joint research institute aligns with Dongguan’s industrial development plans while leveraging CUHK’s research and innovation strengths to promote integrations with the industry.
President of GBU, Academician Tian Gang pointed out that the joint research establishment in advanced materials and green energy would construct a scientific and technological innovation complex with world-class academic impact via complemented strength and resource sharing to nurture talents and contribute to the development of the GBA and national strategic growth.
Professor Song introduced the research projects led by researchers from CUHK Faculty of Science in JIAMGER and their deliverables. Professor Song said, “We look forward to building up JIAMGER towards scientific and technological inventions and creations catalyzed by New Productivity.”
CUHK is Hong Kong’s first university to establish a comprehensive presence in GBA that drives and facilitates collaboration in the region’s educational and research developments. The establishment of this joint research institute will further align with the national goal of building an international center for scientific and technological innovation, serving as a base for education, talent development, and industry-academia collaboration in innovative green technology.
