Global Climate Conference Held Alongside Xue Long 2’s Visit
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the Global Conference on Climate Change from 9 to 10 April. Over 2,000 scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, and guests came together at the Yasumoto International Academic Park to discuss the latest ideas and findings in the context of polar studies and climate change. The attendees were from all walks of life, including government officials, CUHK academics, and students.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan expressed hopes in his welcoming remarks that the two-day event addresses the issue of climate change and how green transformation might be achieved. Quoting an old African proverb, he said: “‘To go fast, you can go alone; but to go far, you must go together’. So may this conference be a transformative and fruitful experience for all of us to go together, and far, on the path of sustainability.”
Over the two-day conference, academics from across the world shared research and knowledge on topics ranging from the movement of krill in the Antarctic to the melting of polar ice.
CUHK Medicine’s Professor Yu Jun Receives the Wu Jieping – Paul Janssen Medical and Pharmaceutical Award
Professor Yu Jun, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics and Assistant Dean (Mainland Affairs) at the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), recently received the “Basic Medicine Award” at the 24th Wu Jieping – Paul Janssen Medical and Pharmaceutical Award. It is a recognition of Professor Yu’s remarkable achievements and contributions to research into the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors.
Having dedicated herself to digestive disease research for 30 years, Professor Yu is currently the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease (CUHK) and the Director of the Institute of Digestive Disease at CUHK. She has made significant contributions to unraveling the molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal cancer development, elucidating the relationship between gut microbiota and tumors, as well as understanding the mechanisms of fatty liver and related liver cancer. She has also played a vital role in the development of early diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
The Award is China’s highest honor in the medical and pharmaceutical field. There were 15 medical and healthcare experts on this year’s awardee list, and Professor Yu is the only one from a Hong Kong institution.
CUHK-Shenzhen Celebrates 10th Anniversary
On 23 March, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) hosted a special ceremony and forum to mark its 10th anniversary landmark. The event attracted more than 1,000 guests from both cities. Scholars and government officials who had played significant roles in the institution’s development including CUHK-Shenzhen President Professor Xu Yangsheng; Honorary Chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology Professor Han Qide; former CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professors Arthur Li Kwok-cheung, Ambrose King Yeo-chi, Lawrence Lau Juen-yee and Joseph Sung Jao-yiu; Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK Professor Rocky S. Tuan and former HKSAR Chief Executive Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, gathered on this remarkable occasion to exchange ideas and review the 10-year journey.
The ceremony was followed by “Development Forums on the 10th Anniversary of CUHK-Shenzhen”. Guests engaged in meaningful discussions on “Joining Hands to Build an International Hub for Higher Education” and “Cultivating Innovative Talent to Foster Internationalization”. They shared ideas and explored topics including talent cultivation, artificial intelligence, global engagement, and policy support.
