Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng Leads a Municipal Government Visit to CUHK






Shanghai Mayor Mr. Gong Zheng led a delegation of the Shanghai Municipal Government to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 28 April. CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan warmly welcomed the delegation and exchanged views with Mr. Gong on CUHK’s development plans in Shanghai. CUHK representatives, including Provost Professor Alan K.L. Chan, also joined the meeting.
The delegates toured the CUHK campus and next visited CUHK’s Multi-scale Medical Robotics Center where Professor Samuel Au Kwok-wai, Founding Co-Director of the Centre, guided the delegation and introduced the latest advancements in the field. A meeting was held with the delegation at the CUHK Artificial Intelligence and Interdisciplinary Research Institute. Professor Lin Dahua, Director of the Institute, provided a comprehensive report on the recent progress. Academic members of the Institute and over 40 joint PhD students also participated in the meeting.
Professor Tuan expressed gratitude for the longstanding support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, particularly for the establishment of the CUHK Artificial Intelligence and Interdisciplinary Research Institute, in collaboration with the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. CUHK is committed to expanding its Greater China footprint, supporting the development of the Yangtze River Delta region. In 2023, CUHK Shanghai Centre was established with the support of the Yangpu District Government. This initiative aims to foster the cultivation of innovative talents, promote scientific and technological cooperation, facilitate academic exchange, support alumni activities and strengthen collaboration with strategic partners. Professor Tuan stated that the University will continue to enhance the synergies among the government, universities, and enterprises to achieve greater impact.
Party Secretary of Sichuan University Visits CUHK
Dr. Gan Lin, Party Secretary of Sichuan University (SCU) led a 15-member delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 19 April. Professor Patrick Wong, Associate Vice-President of CUHK, together with representatives from the Faculty of Medicine and Department of History welcomed the delegation. During the meeting, both sides reviewed the major collaborative initiatives between the two universities, including the progress of joint research units, and discussed potential projects for expansion of collaboration.
CUHK and SCU have been in close relationship since 1994 in a wide range of collaborative projects including research collaborations and student exchange programmes. In 2009, the two universities established the CUHK-Sichuan University Joint Laboratory for Reproductive Medicine to cultivate talents and expand research collaboration in related areas.
Delegation of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Visits CUHK
Mr. Zhou Yaming, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 26 April. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, President and Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, welcomed the delegation on behalf of the University. Development plans were discussed at the meeting with the participation of CUHK representatives including Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Isabella Poon Wai Yin and Professor Song Chunshan, Dean of Science.
Professor Tuan expressed his gratitude to the Shanghai Government for supporting CUHK. He remarked that the establishment of the CUHK Shanghai Center in Yangpu District had signified a significant milestone and opportunity for CUHK in the implementation of the University’s China engagement strategy, contributing to the development of science, education, talent cultivation in Yangpu District, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
Visit of the Party Secretary of Fudan University to CUHK
A delegation led by Professor Qiu Xin, Party Secretary of Fudan University (FDU), and Vice President Professor Chen Zhimin of FDU visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 26 April. The delegates were received by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, President and Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. A bilateral meeting was held with the participation of Professor Isabella Poon Wai Yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Xu Jiang, Chairperson of the Department of Geography and Resource Management, and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. CUHK and FDU renewed the collaboration agreement on the joint master programme during the meeting.
The two universities have been in close partnership since 1985 in a wide range of projects including student exchange, joint research units, collaborative academic programmes, and alliance networks.
