Professor Pan Jianwei Visits CUHK and Receives Honorary Doctorate
On 20 June, Professor Pan Jianwei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Executive Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of China, and Director of the Innovation Research Institute for Quantum Information and Quantum Technology of CAS, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During his visit, he delivered a public lecture and received an honorary doctorate at the CUHK’s 93rd Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees.
Invited by CUHK’s Department of Physics, Professor Pan presented a talk titled “Quantum Entanglement and Beyond”, to share his insights on recent developments in quantum information science. The lecture attracted more than 120 participants to join. As one of the pioneers in experimental research in quantum information, Professor Pan has significant influence in quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum foundations.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical School Visits CUHK
A delegation from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 19 June. It was led by Professor Fan Xianqun, Member of the Standing Committee and Vice President of SJTU, and Dean of Medical School. Professor Fan met with CUHK representatives including Provost Professor Alan K.L. Chan; Dean of Medicine Professor Chiu Wai Yan Philip; Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Professor Tham Chee Yung Clement; and Director China Engagement Ms. Wing Wong. During the meeting, the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK and the Medical School of SJTU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize and enhance their collaboration. This MOU aims to streamline cooperation between the two medical schools, expanding exchanges in teaching, research, and clinical services, and initiating new collaborative projects.
Visit of President of Beihang University
Professor Wang Yunpeng, President of Beihang University, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 22 May. Professor Wang met with Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan K.L. Chan. Other CUHK representatives, including Professor Raymond Tong of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Ms Wong Wing, Director of China Engagement joined the meeting. The exchanges comprised discussions on existing cooperation plans and further projects in student interflow and innovation and technology. The agreement on the joint research center in Biomedical Engineering was renewed at the meeting.
CUHK and Beihang University have established academic partnerships since 2011 and collaborated at various levels in student interflow and research projects. The visit indicated the continuous efforts to foster collaboration between the two universities.
Chongqing Mayor Leads Delegation to Visit CUHK
On 26 June, the Mayor of Chongqing, Mr Hu Henghua, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During the visit, a strategic agreement was signed between CUHK and Chongqing Jinfeng Laboratory. CUHK representatives meeting with the delegation included Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan K.L. Chan; Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chan Wai-yee; Associate Director of School of Biomedical Sciences Professor Chan Wood Yee Woody.
Professor Chan Wai-yee provided an overview of CUHK’s recent innovation and technology advancements and its collaborations with Chongqing. Both sides discussed collaboration plans to enhance linkages. Deputy Director Xu Hui of Jinfeng Laboratory and Professor Chan Wai-yee signed the collaboration agreement on behalf of Jinfeng Laboratory and CUHK respectively. The signing indicated a new chapter in the collaboration between CUHK and Chongqing, aiming to jointly facilitate the building of innovative platforms in the field of life and health sciences between Hong Kong and Chongqing.
President of Wuhan University Visits CUHK
Professor Zhang Pingwen, President of Wuhan University, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 27 May. Provost Professor Alan K.L Chan of CUHK joined the meeting with CUHK representatives including Dean of Law and academic members from the Department of Mathematics.
Both sides discussed potential collaboration opportunities in the fields of mathematics, intelligence education, law, and chemistry, specifically enhancing the exchanges in talent nurturing. Since the first academic exchange agreement between the two universities was signed in 1996, the ties and exchanges between CUHK and Wuhan University have been continuously strengthened, ranging from teaching, and research to student affairs and executive exchanges.
Visit of Vice-Governor of Sichuan Provincial People’s Government
On 13 May, Mr. Yang Xingping, Vice-Governor of Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Acting Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK met with the delegation for exchange with the participation of representatives from the School of Chinese Medicine.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chan gave a presentation on an overview of the University’s strategic development, innovative pharmaceutical initiatives, as well as the updates of the Belt & Road Alliance for Traditional Chinese Medicine (BRATCM). A collaboration agreement was signed between the BRATCM and the Sichuan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Both parties will devote themselves to developing Traditional Chinese Medicine in talent nurturing and promoting modernization and international cooperation. Mr. Yang expressed hope and confidence in leveraging the substantial educational and scientific resources of the two regions to deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, which would provide more talent and intellectual support to promote common development.
Director of International Cooperation of Chinese Academy of Sciences Visits CUHK
Mr. Liu Weidong, Director of Bureau of International Cooperation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 17 June. He was accompanied by Ms. Li Fangfang, Director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs, and representative at the CAS Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation. CUHK members joining the meeting included Professor Chan Wai-yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director China Engagement. Both parties discussed and devised cooperative initiatives under the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region.
