CUHK VC Speaks at Global Higher Education Leaders’ Forum
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was invited to speak at the “Global Higher Education Leaders’ Forum: Networks for Globalization: The Future of Higher Education & Social Sciences Universities Network 2022 Annual Event” held online during 29 to 30 September. The Forum was organized by Renmin University of China (RUC) as one of the signature events in celebration of its 85th Anniversary. It consisted of three sub-forums where higher education leaders around the world gathered to share their views on the future development and focus of higher education. Professor Tuan gave a talk themed “Our Unique Role in Multilateralism”. He remarked that bolstering the collaboration among higher education intuitions is a key to addressing current global challenges in the new era.
CUHK Organizes the 4th Belt and Road and Greater Bay Area Chinese Medicine Symposium
In response to the national and Hong Kong government’s plans for the development of traditional Chinese medicine including the promotion of its inheritance and innovation in the Belt and Road and the Greater Bay Area, and to encourage industry-university-research cooperation among the universities in China’s Mainland and Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) co-organized the 4th Belt and Road and Greater Bay Area Chinese Medicine Symposium from 18 to 19 August 2022. A Preparation Meeting of the Belt and Road Traditional Chinese Medicine Development Alliance was held during the event. The Symposium aims to enhance the research level of basic, translational and clinical Chinese medicine. More than 800 Chinese medicine practitioners from China’s Mainland and Hong Kong attended the event.
Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Mr Zhu Hai-Dong, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Mr Xu Qing-Feng, Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Bureau of Guangdong Province; and Mr Chen Jia, Deputy Director of Office Coordination Department of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The two-day Symposium comprised 17 thematic lectures, and a roundtable meeting. Scholars specialized in Chinese medicine from government, universities, medical organizations, and enterprises of Belt and Road and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area held talks on the application of traditional Chinese medicine in the Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road regions. The role of government, industry, academia and research units and their collaborative efforts in the development and promotion of traditional Chinese medicine was also discussed. The Symposium provided a platform to facilitate exchanges for research and clinical talents in Chinese medicine.
Mr. Tian Xing-Jun, Director of the Sichuan Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Mr. Song Chen-Yang, Deputy Director of the Health Commission of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region; Mr. Hu Hong-Yi, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and Professor Yang Jin-Sheng, Director of the Exchange Center for Taiwan of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine attended the roundtable session with leaders and experts from participating universities. The meeting discussed the establishment of Belt and Road Chinese Medicine Development Alliance, as well as devise plans for future development.
Ningxia Medical University, Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Guangdong Province Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital, CUHK School of Chinese Medicine, CUHK China Engagement Office, and CUHK Office of Strategic Developments collaborated in organizing the event. Collaborating organizations included the Alliance of International Science Organizations, Hong Kong Association of Herbal Pharmacology, the Chinese Medicine Experimental Pharmacology Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, Hainan Medical University, Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, CUHK Institute of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine; and Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Research and Development Centre for Chinese Medicine. Participating enterprises included PuraPharm, Beijing Tong Ren Tang, Beijing Increasepharm, and Shanghai Xingling Science and Technology Pharmaceutical. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Traditional Chinese Medicine Bureau of Guangdong Province, Sichuan Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Health Commission of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region supported the Symposium.
First organized by CUHK in 2019, the Symposium serves to enhance the research collaboration on the foundation, transformation, and clinical application of Chinese medicine, and to establish networks for scholars with an international outlook with joint efforts in promoting the continuous development of Chinese medicine.
