Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Visits CUHK



A delegation led by Professor Liu Chenli, President of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 4 March 2025. Exchange meetings were held for in-depth discussions on deepening innovative technology cooperation and promoting the integration of industry, academia, and research. The purpose of this visit was to explore opportunities to jointly serve the national strategic needs and support the development of an international technology innovation center in the Greater Bay Area.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Dennis Lo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sham Mei-Har, engaged in discussions with SIAT delegates and accompanied by faculty members who support the early development of the SIAT, and academic members from various departments. Professor Lo warmly welcomed the delegation and reviewed the collaboration history with SIAT since 2006. He stated that CUHK and the SIAT have achieved fruitful results in research, infrastructure development, and talent cultivation, and indicated his hope to continue expanding cooperative areas to jointly contribute to the technological innovation development in the Greater Bay Area.
Professor Liu expressed his heartfelt gratitude for CUHK’s long-standing support and emphasized the significant development opportunity between both parties in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, brain science, new energy, and sustainable development. He hoped to further strengthen talent exchanges and toward the building of an “Innovation Bridge” for fundamental research, technology transfer, and industrial application.
CUHK and CAS joined hands with Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish SIAT in February 2006. It aims to enhance the innovative capacity of the equipment manufacturing and service industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong region, and to promote the development of emerging industries, possessing their own proprietary intellectual property. It is the first national research unit with the involvement of overseas institution and the only national institute in Shenzhen.
National Academy of Governance Visits CUHK
On 18 March, Professor Li Wentang, Vice President of the National Academy of Governance, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and had an in-depth exchange with CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Dennis Lo. CUHK representatives joining the meeting with the delegation included Vice President (Administration) Mr. Kenneth Chen Wei-on, Dean of Social Science Professor Anthonyy Fung, Director of the General Education Professor Thomas Lee, and Director of China Engagement Ms. Wong Wing.
During the meeting, Professor Lo introduced the latest developments of CUHK, specifically in student exchange programs and curriculum design. He stated the University’s efforts to cultivate graduates with strong advocates for Hong Kong and the country, and have an international perspective, contributing to the development of Hong Kong, the nation, and the world. Both parties had discussions on how to jointly bolster the educational development of China and expressed a commitment to working together to cultivate more outstanding talents for the country.
National Medical Products Administration Visits CUHK
Professor Xu Jinghe, Deputy Director of the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 2 April. They met with Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, for an exchange. CUHK representatives attending the meeting included Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har, Associate Vice President Professor Allen Chan, Assistant Dean of Medicine Professor Qin Ling, Director of the T Stone Robotics Institute Professor Liu Yunhui, and Director of China Engagement Ms. Wong Wing.
CUHK members and the NMPA delegates held in-depth discussions concerning the latest research developments and strengthening connections in the fields of pharmaceutical and medical device innovation. Both parties explored potential cooperation in such areas as regulatory policy research, capacity building, international standards for medical devices, and medical device innovation.
Delegation from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
On April 23, 2025, a delegation from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Led by Professor Cai Xiujun, President of the hospital and Vice Chairman of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of CPPCC, the delegation met with Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, to explore research collaboration opportunities.
Professor Lo welcomed the delegation and introduced CUHK’s latest developments, while Professor Cai proposed potential collaboration areas with CUHK to devise possible plans. The visit provided an opportunity for both parties to enhance linkage and nurture friendship for academic exchange and research collaboration in medicinal technology.
Visit of the Shenzhen Municipal Government to CUHK





On 12 March 2025, a delegation led by Mr. Chen Qing, Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee Standing Member, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During the visit, the delegation participated in the signing ceremony of 2 collaboration agreements, including the Framework Agreement for Collaboration in Joint Recruitment and Training of Postdoctoral Fellows among the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau of Shenzhen (HRSS), CUHK, Shenzhen [CUHK(SZ)], and CUHK, and the Memorandum of Understanding between the School of Chinese Medicine of CUHK and the Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.
CUHK representatives joining the activities comprised CUHK Provost Professor Isabella Poon, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chan Wai-Yee, CUHK (SZ) Vice President Mr. K.C. Yuen and CUHK(SZ) Associate Vice President Professor X.Q. Cai. Following the signing ceremony and meeting, the delegation visited the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center and the Hong Kong Center for Logistics Robotics at Hong Kong Science Park. These visits provided insights into cutting-edge developments in medical and logistics automation, highlighting the role of interdisciplinary research in advancing healthcare and supply chain technologies. The delegates next toured the State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease at the Prince of Wales Hospital, where they engaged in discussions on digestive disease research.
Delegation of Sichuan Provincial Government Visits CUHK
On 29 March, Sichuan Provincial CPPCC Chairman Ms. Tian Xiangli led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During the visit, they attended the opening ceremony of the 2025 Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hong Kong Tour, which was hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and organized by the Sichuan Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and CUHK School of Chinese Medicine. CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har joined the ceremony and delivered a speech on behalf of CUHK.
Chairman Tian emphasized the medical value of traditional Chinese medicine at present and indicated confidence to the strong development of Sichuan’s traditional Chinese medicine. Professor Sham welcomed the delegation and expressed hopes for deeper cooperation with Sichuan. The delegates visited CUHK Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic cum Clinical Teaching and Research Centre guided by the Director of School of Chinese Medicine Professor Lin Zhixiu, to learn about its operations and research development.
Visit of NSFC Delegation in CUHK
A delegation from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 24 April. A briefing together with a seminar was organized on Policies and NSFC Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation Projects and Key Special Projects for Hong Kong and Macao. The event aimed to enhance the understanding of the academic community in Hong Kong of NSFC funding policies and strengthen research collaboration and exchange.
The NSFC delegation was led by Deputy Director Lan Yujie, and he was accompanied by officials from the China 21st Century Agenda Management Center, the High Technology Research and Development Center, the International Research Funding Department, and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office. CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sham Mai-har delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. Professor Lan, in his opening remarks, emphasized the objective and importance of national research policies. The policy provided an opportunity for participants to gain updated insights into the latest policies and research funding directions of NSFC. In-depth discussions were held on research management and cooperation models to lay a solid foundation to foster collaboration and development.
Shanghai Talent Work Bureau Visits CUHK
Mr. Pan Xiaogang, Director of the Shanghai Talent Work Bureau led a delegation on 5 March to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). A meeting was held with Professor Chan Sun-on, Associate Vice-President of CUHK, and university representatives to discuss on strategies for attracting top international talents, cultivating high-level professionals, and advancing collaboration between Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Both sides explored opportunities to enhance cooperation between Shanghai’s universities and enterprises in innovation and talent exchange. Leveraging on CUHK’s institutional platform strengths and Shanghai’s market advantages, the meeting agreed to establish a more integrated exchange and collaborative mechanism between the two regions. This visit set a strong foundation for future partnerships to be developed in talent development and technological advancements.
Jiangsu Delegation Visits CUHK
On 14 April, a delegation led by Jiangsu Vice Governor Zhao Yan visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The delegation comprised key officials from the Jiangsu Provincial Government from the Education Department, Science and Technology Department, Health Commission, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, and provincial hospitals. They engaged CUHK academic members in discussions on research developments in medicine to explore cross-regional collaboration.
The delegates met with Professor Patrick Wong, Associate Vice President (Research) of CUHK, and Professor Juliana Chan, Director of CUHK Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity. Representatives joining the discussion came from the CUHK Faculty of Medicine and the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Both sides exchanged insights on academic and research cooperation, and a collaboration agreement was signed to pave the way for future joint efforts.
Visits were organized to the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center at the Prince of Wales Hospital, operated by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, as well as the CUHK Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center within the Division of Endocrinology &Diabetes. The activities provided a deep understanding of the latest developments in medical research and clinical applications, fostering knowledge exchange and future collaboration.
