CUHK Establishes a Mathematics Professorship and Signs Agreement with Tsinghua University
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received a generous donation of US$1 million from Professor Yau Shing-tung, Dean of Qiuzhen College, Tsinghua University, to establish the “Chiu Chin Yin Early Career Professorship in Mathematics” under CUHK’s The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSCI) and Department of Mathematics. CUHK and Tsinghua University held the inauguration ceremony of the professorship on 24 October. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed on the day between the two institutions to strengthen collaboration in talent nurturing, staff exchange, and scientific research.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan remarked at the ceremony that Professor Yau is one of the most influential mathematicians of our time. It is truly an honor to welcome back Professor Yau to celebrate new initiatives that foster the advancement of scholarship to nurture an innovative and well-educated next generation of leaders. In his speech, Professor Yau stated his deep connection with CUHK and hoped to give back to his alma mater by strengthening collaboration in mathematics education and research between Tsinghua and CUHK in the field of mathematics.
CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Poon Wai-yin and Professor Yau signed the MoU on behalf of CUHK and Tsinghua. It marks closer cooperation between the two universities in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and artificial intelligence.
CUHK Signs Agreement in Southern Advanced Photon Source Development
On 26 October, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and universities from Hong Kong and Macao signed cooperation agreements with China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) to deepen cooperation in meeting the user needs in the Greater Bay Area for the world’s most advanced fourth-generation synchrotron radiation light source devices. The collaboration will further promote the formation of a large scientific device cluster with complementary research strengths. Professor Sham Mai-har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, attended the signing ceremony and signed the agreement with CSNS on behalf of the University. Participating universities will engage in the design, construction, and operation of the Southern Advanced Photon Source (SAPS), and jointly explore new development models.
Located in Dongguan, CSNS is the first national major scientific and technological infrastructure in the Greater Bay Area and has been collaborating with universities from Hong Kong and Macao to complete a range of projects. The participation of Hong Kong is of significant importance for research advancement and industrial upgrading in the Greater Bay Area, as well as for the development of a comprehensive national science center and an international technology innovation center.
