During the Beijing trip from 4 to 6 September, the delegation held a meeting with leaders from the Ministry of Education, reporting on CUHK’s strategies to align with the national education development plan, striving to support Hong Kong’s development into an international hub for innovation, technology, and education. The delegates visited partners in Beijing including the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Beijing Talent Work Bureau to promote comprehensive, sustained collaborations and deepening international academic exchanges. Over the past year, it has leveraged the resources of both Shanghai and Hong Kong to promote scientific and innovative collaborations, academic exchanges, and professional talent cultivation. The University announced that the Shanghai base of CUHK InnoPort (Innoport@Shanghai) has admitted its first five knowledge transfer projects, led by CUHK professors, and the CUHK Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has established a representative office at the Shanghai Centre, providing updated information for students interested in applying to CUHK.
CUHK also launched a series of collaborative projects with Shanghai’s Yangpu District, covering internships for Hong Kong students, a landmark design competition, and preparation seminars for listing digital economy enterprises and expanding the new economy. The delegation also met with other strategic partners such as Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and SenseTime to further collaborative efforts. Multiple cooperation agreements were signed with Shanghai Jiao Tong University during the visit, including academic exchanges and a dual-degree programme in Financial Technology and Finance.
CUHK and Peking University Jointly Convene the Second Sino-US University Presidents’ Dialogue
Building on the success of the inaugural event held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in December 2023, CUHK and Peking University jointly convened the second Sino-US University Presidents’ Dialogue at The University of Chicago on 23 September 2024 to foster academic exchange and collaboration between universities in China and the US, especially in nurturing young talent.
The event attracted over 80 participants from leading institutions, including some 30 university leaders. Distinguished speakers from China’s C9 League, CUHK, The University of Chicago, Harvard University, Yale University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, among others, engaged in discussions on strengthening academic collaborations and exchanges and explored the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies in reshaping higher education to enhance learning experiences, improve productivity, and promote inclusivity and accessibility.
Professor Jie Chen, Vice Minister of Education for the Ministry of Education of The People’s Republic of China, joined CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Peking University President Professor Gong Qihuang, and The University of Chicago Provost Professor Katherine Baicker in opening the event. In his opening speech, Professor Tuan said: “This event underscores the vital role higher education plays in fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the two educational and economic heavyweights on both sides of the Pacific. Today’s meeting stands as a testament to our shared commitment to advancing higher education and discovering sustainable solutions that benefit not only our nations but also the world.” Professor Tuan also chaired the panel on advancing academic collaboration between US and Chinese universities, exploring insights from the speakers on how universities in the two countries can best forge closer ties.
