Executive Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of China Visits CUHK
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) welcomed a delegation led by Academician Professor Pan Jianwei, Executive Vice President of University of Science and Technology of China on 16 October. The delegation met with Professor Rocky S. Tuan, President and Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. He was accompanied by Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Song Chun-Shan, Dean of Science; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement.
The two parties discussed a number of topics, including the collaboration plans to jointly further the research collaboration in Quantum Science to utilize Hong Kong’s strength in forming a world-class research team and building an advanced platform, covering quantum communications, quantum computing and simulation, and quantum precision measurement.
President of Shanghai University Leads a Delegation to Visit CUHK
Professor Liu Chang-Sheng, President of Shanghai University, led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 18 October. The delegation met with Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Professor Qin Ling, Assistant Dean (Mainland Affairs), Faculty of Medicine; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement.
CUHK members gave a brief introduction on the recent development of the University and both sides had discussions on further collaboration opportunities. The delegates visited the State Key Laboratory of Synthetic Chemistry (CUHK) after the meeting. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and build up links.
CUHK President Meets with Mainland Strategic Partners
During the celebration of its 60th anniversary, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invited mainland strategic partner institutions to participate in a series of commemorative events. Professor Rocky S Tuan, Vice Chancellor of CUHK met with some of the leaders of mainland partners. He held meeting with President Wang Shu-Guo of Xi’an Jiaotong University to engage in discussions and both presidents renewed the academic exchange agreement as well as the collaborative agreement on joint research center for Migration on behalf of the two universities.
Meetings were also held with President Han Jie-Cai of Harbin Institute of Technology and President Tan Zhe-Min of Nanjing University respectively to discuss on collaboration plans. Agreements were concluded on talent cultivation including nomination of PhD students and joint supervision of postgraduate students.
Shanghai Yangpu District Secretary Visits CUHK
Mr. Xue Kan, the Secretary of Shanghai Yangpu District, led a delegation from the Yangpu District Committee to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 12 December. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, President and Vice Chancellor of CUHK, welcome the delegation on behalf of the University. CUHK representatives in attendance included CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har and Professor Benny Zee, Director of the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services.
Professor Tuan expressed his gratitude to Yangpu District Government for the support to CUHK. The establishment of the CUHK Shanghai Center in Yangpu District represents the successful achievement of a significant milestone in the implementation of the University’s strategic plan to strengthen the engagements in the mainland to the development of science, education, talent cultivation in Yangpu District, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
The delegation next toured the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center and the CUHK Innoport, where they met with representatives from CUHK’s start-up companies to learn about the latest development in related fields.
Vice-President of Beijing Foreign Studies University Leads a Delegation to Visit CUHK
Professor Zhao Gang, Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 12 October. He was received by Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Professor Seen Meng Chew, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Business Administration; and Ms. Elaine Tam, Director of Office of Student Affairs. Both sides held discussions to strengthen cooperation in a range of areas including student interflows and talent training. Plans were devised to provide more opportunities in academic exchange and enhance the ties between the two universities.
Party Secretary of Xiamen University Visits CUHK
On 18 October, Professor Zhang Rong, Party Secretary of Xiamen University (XMU) led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The delegation held a meeting with Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony So, Dean of Graduate School; Professor Xu Jianbin, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering; Professor Benny Zee, Director of Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement, to exchange views on student training and research collaboration.
CUHK and XMU have been in close partnership since 1990 in a range of collaborative projects including alliance network and student programmes.
NSFC Visits CUHK
The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) delegation, led by Dr. Gao Rui-Ping, Vice President and Member of CPC Leading Group of NSFC, paid a visit to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 25 October. They held productive discussions with CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har; Professor Jiang Li-Wen, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science; Professor Benny Zee, Director of Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement, to gain a deeper understanding of the latest research developments in Hong Kong and research activities with the Chinese Mainland.
Since 2007, CUHK has been co-organizing academic symposiums on different themes with NSFC. The symposium provides a platform for scholars from both places to publish their research results, exchange ideas and share research progress, with the purpose of promoting academic exchanges and strengthening scientific research cooperation.
Zhongshan Municipal Government Visits CUHK
On November 8, a delegation led by Mr. Ye Hong-Guang, Vice Mayor of Zhongshan, comprising representatives from the Zhongshan Municipal Party Committee Office, Municipal Commerce Bureau, and Science and Technology Bureau visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
The delegates paid visits to CUHK’s Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center, and the Institute of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Meetings were held to learn about CUHK’s recent research and technology transfer activities and achievements. CUHK has always attached great importance to establish a close partnership with the partners in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in diversified cooperation, and fully contribute to the region’s educational development and scientific research.
Dongguan Municipal Government Visits CUHK
Deputy Secretary-General of the Dongguan Municipal Party Committee, Mr. Gan Wei-Jia, led a delegation to visit the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 9 November. A meeting was held with Professor Song Chunshan ,Dean of Faculty of Science; Professor Wei Tao, Assistant Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Science; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement, to learn more about the development of innovation and technology, knowledge transfer and enterprise cultivation in both regions.
Dongguan and Hong Kong are the important cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In December 2022, CUHK signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Great Bay University to build the Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research in Dongguan, promoting the linkage and synergy of research collaboration with industry, and talent nurturing for the Greater Bay Area.
