CUHK Delegation Visits Dongguan and Zhongshan
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, the then Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) led a delegation to Dongguan and Zhongshan on 26 November. The delegation comprised Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-Har; Professor Song Chun-Shan, Dean of Science; Professor Ngai To, Assistant Dean of Science; and Professor Edwin Chan, Director of the School of Life Sciences.
During the visit to Dongguan, CUHK and the Great Bay Area University (GBU) held an inauguration ceremony for the CUHK-GBU Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER). Mr. Feng Bin, Deputy Secretary-General of the Dongguan Municipal Government; Academician Tian Gang, President of GBU; Professor Dai Changliang and Professor Li Xiaoming, Vice Presidents of GBU attended the ceremony.
Professor Tuan led the delegates to Zhongshan in the afternoon, where they discussed plans with Mr. Ouyang Jinquan, Vice Mayor, and representatives from the Municipal Party Committee and the Science and Technology Bureau. Both sides engaged in extensive exchanges on topics covering collaboration expansion, innovation development, and knowledge transfer to leverage Zhongshan’s unique geographical and industrial advantages, and fully utilize CUHK’s capabilities in innovation and entrepreneurship, talent cultivation, and technology transfer.
CUHK has always attached great importance to establishing a close partnership with the Chinese Mainland and promoting diversified collaborations. The University actively integrates into the national development plan, leverages Hong Kong’s unique advantages, and fully contributes to the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA). CUHK is Hong Kong’s first university to establish a comprehensive presence in GBA that drives and facilitates collaboration in the region’s educational and research developments. This visit to the GBA key cities will further align with the national goals of building an international science and technology innovation center and an education and talent hub.
CUHK Joins the Global Forum of University Presidents for the Centennial Anniversary Celebration of Sun Yat-sen University



Professor Rocky Tuan, the then Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was invited to attend the Global Forum of University Presidents for the 100th Anniversary of Sun Yat-sen University. The anniversary event was held on 11 November 2024. Presidents and representatives from almost 70 universities across the globe participated in the Forum to exchange views on the challenges and new missions of universities in innovation development.
Professor Tuan gave a keynote presentation at the Forum and shared insights on the role of universities as an engine of research innovation. At the parallel forum with the theme of sustainability development, Professor Tuan introduced CUHK’s engagement towards achieving the mission of social responsibility, including the commitment to promoting sustainable development.
Since establishing a partnership in the 1980s, CUHK has been in close collaboration with SYSU in a wide range of collaborative projects. Both universities joined hands with the University of Macau to initiate the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in November 2016, which aims to promote regional development in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area by consolidating resources of elite universities and nurturing talents.
