The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) co-organized the 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum (GSF) Distinguished Lectures with the GSF Secretariat and Department of Human Resources and Social Security of Guangdong Province on 31 July. With the aim of promoting active exchange and learning of young scientists in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the event was held in Guangzhou and Hong Kong simultaneously. Professor Zhong Nanshan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Winner of China’s Medal of the Republic; Professor Dennis Lo, President of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences; Professor Zhang Xu, Academician of CAS; and Professor Fan Chunhai, Academician of CAS shared their views on their respective innovation achievements and research experiences, and hold dialogue with young scientists from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao through online and offline platforms.
Officiating guests who spoke at the opening of the event included Mr. Leung Chun-Ying, Vice-chairman of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Chairperson of the Strategic Advisory Council of the GSF; Professor Bai Chunli, CAS Academician, Chairman of GSF and Chairman of the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO); and Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK.
Professor Tuan said in his speech that CUHK has established five industry-academic-research bases in the GBA and is actively expanding innovation and entrepreneurship projects in the Futian District of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan and other regions. The University will also continue its efforts to strengthen cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance. To give full play to its own advantages to support the construction of the GBA International Science and Technology Innovation Center as well as the Comprehensive National Science Center, CUHK continues to shoulder the responsibility to make greater contributions to the country’s scientific and technological self-reliance and independent cultivation of talents.
2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum Distinguished Lectures is one of the 60th-anniversary celebrations of CUHK. It has received strong support from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangdong) Talent Port. It is also a response to the “Nansha Plan” to provide a platform for promoting the development of scientific and technological innovation and as one of the events to facilitate the exchange of young talents in the GBA.
Established by ANSO in 2021, GSF is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the China Association for Science and Technology, and is organized by the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government. It has become the highest-level academic event in the Greater Bay Area. ANSO is an international, non-profit, and non-governmental scientific organization for identifying and addressing common issues in the Belt and Road Region to tackle world scientific challenges. Founding members include scientific and research organizations from Russia, Pakistan, Poland, Hungary, Nepal, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Brazil. CUHK is the only institution from Hong Kong in the Alliance.
Jointly hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Tsinghua University, the 6th World Philanthropy Forum was held at CUHK on 5 September, with the theme of Creating a Better World; Creating a Better Future. It covered various subjects, including the contribution everyone can make to charity in their own small ways, the role of women in philanthropy, youth charities as a representation of the future and hope, Chinese philanthropy that contributes to and influences worldwide, and the special role of charity in confronting disasters. Speakers at the forum advocated for the importance of attention, support, and dedication from all sectors of society in order to shape a better future. The forum gathered more than 200 guests from China’s mainland, Hong Kong and Macao, North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia, representing business, academia, the social welfare sector, the World Health Organization, and others. The event was held in hybrid mode, with both online and offline sessions; more than 500,000 viewers tuned in to the live stream.
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and Professor Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, delivered the opening addresses. Keynote speeches were then delivered by Mr. Birger Stamperdahl, President and Chief Executive Officer of Give2Asia; Revd Canon Hon Peter Douglas Koon Ho-ming, member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong; Professor Carlo Lo Wing-hung, Chairperson of CUHK’s Department of Government and Public Administration; Mr. Sun Lijun, President of Alibaba Foundation; and Professor Peng Kaiping, Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Tsinghua University.
In Professor Tuan’s speech, he said that the World Philanthropy Forum being held in Hong Kong was very meaningful, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of CUHK. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is facing new challenges and opportunities, and philanthropy is one of the important indicators of human moral progress and social development. As the Hong Kong Secretariat of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), CUHK is committed to promoting sustainable development solutions and cultivating students who actively fulfill their social responsibilities. The forum will serve as a platform to establish global networks and partnerships, develop more effective strategies and plans, achieve greater impact, and contribute to the world’s development, with the goal of ensuring that philanthropy benefits every individual worldwide.
The inaugural World Philanthropy Forum was held at Tsinghua University on September 5, 2016. Over the past eight years, the forum has become an important platform for sharing global philanthropy and social service experiences, academic exchange, and policy advocacy, as well as implementation and promotion. The forum gathers people from all over the world, strengthens connections between different societies, and promotes the development of philanthropic services globally. It has spurred global cooperation in philanthropy and social work.
Mr. Pan Yundong, Acting Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was invited to deliver a talk at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on September 22, with the topic of Current International Situation and China’s Diplomacy. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK gave a welcome speech, and Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK joined the talk as the moderator.
Commissioner Pan made an in-depth analysis of the outstanding features of the current international situation from the aspects including the historic changes in the international balance of power, the profound adjustment of global development momentum, and the evolution of international politics and social trends of thought. He pointed out that facing a century of changes and world chaos, China always adheres to the foreign policy purpose of safeguarding world peace and promoting common development, and is committed to promoting the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind. He also gave a detailed introduction to Sino-US relations, Taiwan issues, Hong Kong-related anti-intervention struggles, and issues of common concern.
In his speech, Professor Tuan expressed the hope that members of CUHK can enhance their understanding of international affairs, grasp the general trends of the world, and actively serve the country’s development needs through teaching, research, and international exchanges and collaboration. The lecture attracted more than 200 students and academic members to participate.
