Following the success of the first Greater Bay Area Summer School (GBASS) held in 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the second CUHK GBASS in 2021. In 2022, GBASS was renamed Summer School for Mainland Students (SSMS) to expand admission to all partner universities in China’s Mainland and Macao with a greater variety of participation.
2023 SSMS was held from 31 July to 11 August 2023, offering four courses where each participant can choose one. The response was overwhelmingly good receiving nearly 300 applications from mainland universities. Due to the limited quota, 180 students were admitted to SSMS. Participating students studied and interflowed with students from different mainland universities as well as experienced the learning atmosphere of CUHK. They enjoyed the summer school and benefited a lot from the two-week courses and a number of extracurricular activities organized by CUHK students, which provided an opportunity to learn from each other and get to know more about Hong Kong culture.
To celebrate the successful completion of the student programmes organized by the China Engagement Office (CEO) in 2023, a closing ceremony for The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Summer Programmes was held on 11 August. Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, officiated at the ceremony and gave a speech to participating students who were invited to share their learning experiences. The ceremony was organized with the participation of more than 300 attendants.
Professor Chan concluded the great achievements of the summer programmes and encouraged the students to integrate what they have learned to get well prepared for the challenges ahead. Student representatives shared their experiences and views from various summer programmes including CUHK Summer School for Mainland Students, Summer Research Placement Programme for Mainland and Taiwan Students, Mainland and Taiwan Visiting Student Programme, and Zhejiang Lab Research Internship Programme for Faculty of Engineering PhD Students. Participating students of various programmes were presented with certificates of completion as encouragement.
