Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a delegation of CUHK’s senior management team to visit Beijing and Shanghai from 25 to 29 August 2023. The delegation, which comprised Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Provost of CUHK, Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments) of CUHK, Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of CUHK, senior administrators, as well as Faculty Deans, visited Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Yangpu District in Shanghai and other strategic partners in Beijing, signing multiple collaboration agreements and engaging in in-depth discussions with partners such as the Shanghai Knowledge and Innovation Community in the Yangpu District, Sunmi Technology Co. Ltd. and Douyin Group. During the visit, CUHK also unveiled the CUHK Shanghai Centre, the Shanghai base of the CUHK InnoPort, and the research base of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai. This year, the University has established six new mainland bases to promote the industry, academic, and research collaborations, building a strong network of scientific and technology innovation facilities across the whole country.
This visit holds significant importance for the University’s collaborations with Beijing and Shanghai. On 25th August in Beijing, CUHK participated in the inauguration ceremony of the National Torch Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Zhongguancun) as a founding partner. This will spearhead the establishment of a special branch of the Academy in Hong Kong. The CUHK delegation was also invited to the inaugural High-level Talent Highland Forum and several important activities in Beijing. On 28th August, CUHK invited leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Yangpu District and partner universities in Shanghai, and alumni from the Yangtze River Delta region to the opening ceremony of the CUHK Shanghai Centre, an occasion marking a major milestone in the collaboration between Hong Kong and Shanghai. The ceremony saw the signing of the “Shanghai Yangpu District People’s Government–The Chinese University of Hong Kong Strategic Collaboration Framework Agreement” and the unveiling of the Shanghai base of the CUHK InnoPort (InnoPort@Shanghai). During his visit to Shanghai, Professor Tuan participated in the CUHK’s 60th Anniversary Dinner organized by the Shanghai Alumni Association to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the University with alumni in the Yangtze River Delta Region.
The CUHK delegates also had substantial exchanges with universities and research enterprises in Shanghai. They visited Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), renewing the agreement on the Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute” with the former, as well as the agreement on the CUHK-SJTU Joint Research Centre on Medical Robotics and the agreement on the CUHK-SJTU Joint Research Centre in Diabetes Genomics and Precision Medicine with the latter. Several new collaboration agreements were signed, including the one on CUHK-Fudan University Joint International Financial Research Centre and the agreement on CUHK-SJTU Dual Degree Programmes. Another focus of the visit was the unveiling of the research base of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai. In addition, the delegation engaged in in-depth discussions on research and development, talent cultivation, and industry-academia-research cooperation with renowned scientific research enterprises and organizations such as the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Sunmi Technology Group Co. Ltd. and Douyin Group, aiming to deepen the University’s connection with industry and research organizations.

With the establishment of the National Torch Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Zhongguancun) by CUHK as a founding partner, that of the CUHK Shanghai Centre, InnoPort@Shanghai, and the research base of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai, alongside the opening of the CUHK Beijing Centre in June, CUHK has set up six new bases nationwide this year. These bases are located in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, aiming to enhance cooperation among the government, industry, academia, and research sectors. Together with over ten existing facilities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as future development plans, we are building a strong and robust mainland network. As the University strides confidently into the next decade, it will continue to integrate actively into the national development and advance its latest strategic plan, CUHK 2025, and strategies for mainland development. We look forward to deepening our work with mainland partners to promote talent cultivation, scientific innovation, and education so as to build a more prosperous and innovative society together.”
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), visited Shanghai from 20th to 21st September 2023 with an aim to strengthen ties and foster collaboration with District Government and partner institutions in Shanghai. He met with Yangpu District Government officials and senior management members of East China University of Political Science and Law, and Tongji University.
Professor Tuan had a meeting with Mr. Zhou Haiying, Director of the Yangpu District; Mr. Li Zhengming, Director of Yangpu District Office of the People’s Government, Mr. Zheng Yuexiao, Chairman of Shanghai Yangpu Technology and Innovation Group, Ms. Yang Ling, Deputy Director of Shanghai Penta Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute. They exchanged ideas on recent developments and collaboration projects at the CUHK Shanghai Centre and Innoport@Shanghai.
During the visit to Shanghai, Professor Tuan met with Mr. Guo Weilu, Secretary of the Party Committee, and other senior management of East China University of Political Science and Law to discuss future development plans between the two Universities. Professor Tuan also visited Tongji University and had a meeting with Party Secretary Fang Shou En and President Professor Zheng Qinghua. Both parties exchanged views to consolidate collaboration efforts for partnership development.
Professor Poon Wai-yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the 40th Anniversary celebration activities of Shenzhen University (SZU) on 27 September. She met with Professor Li Qingquan, Secretary of the Party Committee of SZU; Professor Mao Junfa, President of SZU and Professor Zhang Xueji, Vice President of SZU, expressing sincere congratulations for the anniversary on behalf of CUHK and having exchange.
CUHK and SZU have been collaborating closely for many years in different fields, including student exchanges and academic research. Professor Poon expressed that both universities will continue to work together to make a greater contribution to the higher education development of the country.
