CUHK Attends Forum on Building World Class Universities and Annual Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China
The 2022 Forum on Building World Class Universities and Annual Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China (AUPC) was held on 25 May 2023 owing to the pandemic. Participants attended the events including 12 Presidents/Vice Presidents of AUPC member institutions and officials and representatives of the Ministry of Education. Professor Alan Chan, Acting President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) joined the annual meeting and give a presentation at the Forum on behalf of the University.
With the theme of Developing World-class Universities with Chinese Characteristics under the Three-in-One Construction of Education, Science and Technology, and Talents, the Forum had 12 presidents delivering speeches on the topic and taking part in subsequent discussions. Provost Alan Chan gave a speech entitled “Education Programme and Innovative Ecosystem for Talent Development”, sharing CUHK’s efforts to promote interdisciplinary education programmes, enhance the effectiveness of the innovation system, and promote the transformation of scientific research outcomes into an influential application in the development of Hong Kong as an international science and technology innovation center.
The annual round table meeting of AUPC was held on the same day and discussion items included the revision of AUPC Charter, next annual meeting and forum, and development plans. Participating senior members exchanged opinions on the future endeavors of AUPC and in creating positive impacts on the future development of higher education.
AUPC was founded in 1997, comprising 12 members including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, Xi’an Jiaotong University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong. The Association aims to dedicate its expertise and coordinate resources to the development of higher education in China. Through meetings and forums, AUPC aims to enhance the linkage among member universities and promote regular exchange and cooperation, to achieve academic and research excellence.
CUHK Hosts Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance (GHMUA) Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum on the CUHK campus on 4 July 2023. The event brought together more than 150 delegates comprising university leaders and government officials to assess the development of GHMUA with a specific focus on joint efforts in promoting the continuous progress of the Alliance during the post-pandemic era.
Main guests participating in the event included Mr Shu Gangbo, Deputy Director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Ministry of Education; Ms Wu Cheng, Deputy Director of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Mr Shi Shuzheng, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Dr Zhu Chaohua, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Dr Choi Yuk-lin, JP, Secretary for Education in the HKSAR ; Mr. Ding Shaoxiong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau in the Macao Special Administrative Region; representatives from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government; Professor Gao Song, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Chairman of the Alliance Board; Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK and Vice Chairman of the Alliance Board and Professor Song Yonghua, President of the University of Macau (UM) and Vice Chairman of the Alliance Board.
In his opening remarks, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said, “the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan promulgated in 2019 is committed to promoting a new effort for a comprehensive opening up and mentions the role of the Alliance. Whilst showing the importance of the Alliance, it guides the direction of our future development and gives us a more pressing mission. The National 14th Five-Year Plan proposes to build a science and technology innovation corridor. It is particularly important for the three regions to rely on the existing advantages of higher education to highlight talent cultivation. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is very much honored to be deeply involved in the education and research development of the Greater Bay Area and to promote the cultivation of innovative talents. In particular, the introduction of talents to be engaged in original research and knowledge transfer will utilize our strengths in commercialization and professional training to achieve win-win outcomes.”
The guests expressed their continued support and commitment to GHMUA, with the hope that the development of the Alliance would bolster the influence of the Greater Bay Area, bringing significant advances in cooperation by drawing together the strengths of the three regions. The Presidents’ Forum was held across three-panel discussions where presidents of the member universities exchanged views under the theme “pooling wisdom for a bright future”.
GHMUA was established in November 2016. It was initiated by CUHK together with SYSU and UM as a higher education platform to extend the current efforts of leading universities in the three regions to pursue research excellence, nurture young talent, and serve their communities. Members of the Alliance include 27 universities from Guangdong Province, nine universities from Hong Kong, as well as seven institutions from Macao. As one of the initiating universities, CUHK has been playing a key role in mobilizing resources across the Alliance to propel innovation development and talent nurturing in the Greater Bay Area.
CUHK Hosts the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao University Alliance Summit on Post-pandemic Challenges in Public Health
The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted the “Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao University Alliance (GHMUA) Summit on Post-pandemic Challenges in Public Health” on 12 and 13 May. During the Summit, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony was held to renew the collaboration agreement with the five partners of GHMUA for Public Health to deepen academic exchanges and research collaboration. The event attracted more than 250 scholars, teachers, and students from Hong Kong, Macao, and the Chinese Mainland.
Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Professor Lo Chung-Mau, BBS, JP, Secretary for Health of the HKSAR Government; Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor / President of CUHK, and Professor Samuel Wong, Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care. Over 27 top-notched public health leaders from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao took part in the Summit. The event brought together public health scholars in the region to share insights and relevant research results, inspiring participants to reflect on the challenges faced by public health during the pandemic, as a learning, reshaping process for innovative ideas.

Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Education Assessment Alliance Established
A launch meeting of Guangdong- Hong Kong- Macao Education Assessment Alliance cum Symposium on Technology and Applications of Large-Scale Education Assessment were held on 21 May at the Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University. Around 100 scholars and guests from 25 universities, 20 education and research institutes, and 5 enterprises in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao attended the meeting and symposium.
On behalf of one of the initiating universities, Professor Fan Xitao, Dean of the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) stated in his speech that the Alliance is the first collaboration unit in the field of education assessment in the Greater China. It will aim to support a balanced and high-quality development of education in the region via utilizing the respective resources of universities and research institutes in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and the surrounding areas. He hoped that more institutions will join the Alliance to promote the research and application of educational evaluation in the Greater Bay Area.
