Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government Visits CUHK
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), together with CUHK representatives welcomed the delegation led by Mr. Qin Wei-Zhong, Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, on 21 February. The delegation visited two research bases of CUHK. Representatives of CUHK also included Professor Alan Chan, Provost; Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research); and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. Delegates from Shenzhen included Mr. Zeng Pai, Director of Qianhai Administration Bureau and Secretary of the Nanshan District Committee; Mr. Gao Sheng-Yuan, Secretary-General of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Director of the General Office; Mr. Guo Zi-Ping, Director of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission; Mr. Jiang Li-Kun, Executive Deputy Director of the Municipal Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office; Ms. Zheng Xiu-Yu, Secretary of the Party Group of Municipal Education Bureau; Mr. Wang You-Ming, Director of the Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Committee; Ms. Zhang Fei-Meng, Director of the Municipal Bureau of Commerce; Mr. Huang Xiao-Peng, Executive Deputy Director of Qianhai Administration Bureau; and Mr. Zhang Lin, Deputy Director of the Organization Department of the Municipal Party Committee.
Professor Tuan and Mr. Qin exchanged views on further developments in the region to enhance collaboration. Professor Tuan expressed gratitude to Mr. Qin for his consistent support to CUHK, specifically the development of CUHK-Shenzhen in giving full play to contribute broadly to the national strategies on education, innovation, and talent cultivation. The delegation next visited the CUHK Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center and Electrochemical Energy and Interfaces Laboratory to learn more about recent research achievements of the University.
Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee and Municipal People’s Government Visit CUHK

Representatives of CUHK comprised Professor Alan Chan, Provost; Professor Philip Chiu, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine; Professor Patrick Yung, Assistant Dean (Alumni Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine; Professor Qin Ling, Assistant Dean (Mainland Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine, Director of Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Research Institute (Futian); Professor Michael Tong, Chairman of Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery; Professor Yam Yeung, Director of Shenzhen Research Institute; Professor Meng Mei Ling Helen, Director of Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence; Professor Liu Yun-Hui, Director of CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute; Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement; and Dr. Lin Huangquan, Director of Office for Greater Bay Area Developments and Executive Director of Shenzhen Research Institute. The delegation included Mr. Zheng Hong-Bo, Member of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Member of the Party Group of the Shenzhen Municipal Government; Mr. Jiang Li-Kun, Executive Deputy Director of the Greater Bay Area Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee (Hong Kong and Macau Office); Mr. Lou Yan-Feng, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission; and Mr. Tan Dai, Deputy Director of the Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology.
Provost Prof. Chan and relevant project leaders introduced the recent and future layout and project development of CUHK in Shenzhen. Participants discussed specific topics and exchanged views to share their insights on further growth of collaboration.
Longgang District Committee Visits CUHK and Signs Collaboration Agreement
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the delegation of the Longgang District on 15 to 16 February and signed collaboration agreement. In the afternoon on 15 February, Exchange Meeting on Economic, Trade, Science and Technology Education of Longgang District was held on CUHK campus. Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development), and Mr. You Yu, Member of the Standing Committee of the Longgang District Committee and Director of the United Front Work Department, gave opening speeches at the meeting. Representatives of Longgang District introduced the recent development plans of Longgang, while the head of the research teams of CUHK and members from outstanding alumni companies shared their project achievements.
Mr. Zhang Yu-Qing, Deputy Head of Longgang District, and Professor Chan Wai Yee of CUHK, signed the “Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement on Healthcare” on behalf of both parties. CUHK and Longgang District agreed to carry out in-depth cooperation in basic and clinical research in medical and health, advancing talent nurturing and knowledge transfer, so as to integrate into the development strategy of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with full play of complementary advantages. According to the agreement, the two parties plan to jointly build the “Shenzhen Research Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of CUHK”, to escalate the level of teaching, scientific research, and knowledge transfer.
Mr. Zhang Liwei, Party Chief of the Longgang District, visited CUHK on 16 February. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and Professor Alan Chan K. L., Provost of CUHK, met with Mr. Zhang to discuss future collaboration plans. Professor Tuan said, “As early as 2006, CUHK has been expanding strategic development projects in industry, education, and research in Shenzhen. CUHK-Shenzhen is the key development with foresight in running tertiary institutes. With the strong support of the Shenzhen Municipal Government and Longgang District Government, CUHK-Shenzhen has become a successful model in the Mainland and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. I look forward to a closer cooperative relationship with Longgang District, and working together toward the continuous development of future cooperation and a new chapter.”
CUHK-Shenzhen landed in Longgang in 2014. It has been rapidly growing into a research-oriented university based in China and facing the world. Through the establishment of innovation platforms, CUHK-Shenzhen promotes the development of education, technology, talents, and industries in Longgang.
Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Delegation Visits CUHK
A delegation of Beijing Municipal Committee (BMC) of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 29 March. The BMC CPPCC delegation was led by Mr. Wei Xiaodong, BMC CPPCC President. The BMC CPPCC delegation members included Mr. Han Yu, Secretary; Mr. Zhao Hongsheng, Director of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese and Foreign Affairs Committee; Mr. Li Hui, Deputy Director of External Affairs (Hong Kong- Macao Affairs) of The People’s Government of Beijing Municipality; Ms. Zang Likun, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese and Foreign Affairs Committee; Mr. Zhang Xuchun, Officer of BMC CPPCC General Office; and Mr. Liu Ke, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese and Foreign Affairs Committee. During the meeting, VC introduced to the delegation the development milestones of CUHK in Beijing. After the meeting, the delegation visited Centre for Novostics and Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC) of CUHK at Hong Kong Science Park.
Tsinghua Visits CUHK
A delegation of Tsinghua University (Tsinghua) visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 20 March. The Tsinghua delegation was led by Professor Wang Hongwei, Vice President. Delegation members included Professor Huang Tianyin, Founding Dean of Tsinghua Medicine; Professor Wu Jian, Dean of Tsinghua Medicine, Director of Neurology Centre of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital; Mr. Wang Haibo, Deputy Director of Medical Data Standardization Research Center of Hospital Management Research Institute; Ms. Xiao Qian, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office. Representatives of CUHK included, Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President; Professor Chan Wai Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); Professor Wong Yeung Shan Samuel, Associate Dean (Education) of Faculty of Medicine, and Director of The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care; Professor Chiu Wai Yan Philip, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of Faculty of Medicine, and Director of Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center; Professor Fung Hong, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre (CUHKMC); and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. The Tsinghua delegation visited CUHKMC after the meeting with CUHK representatives. On the same date, Professor Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, met with Professor Poon Wai-yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK. Representatives of CUHK attended the meeting included Professor Zou Jun, Chairman of Department of mathematics and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mathematics; Professor Song Zheng, Chairman of Department of Economics; and Professor Lee Pak Ching Patrick, Vice-Chairman of Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Since the first academic exchange agreement between the two universities signed in 1985, the ties and exchanges between CUHK and Tsinghua have been continuously strengthened, ranging from teaching, research to student affairs and executive exchanges. The two universities jointly established the MBA program in Finance, Joint Research Center for Chinese Economy and Dual Degree Program in Economics, and co-organized World Philanthropy Forum.
CUHK Receives PKU President Delegation
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the delegation led by Professor Gong Qi-Huang, President of Peking University (PKU) on 1 March. The delegates met with CUHK senior management to exchange ideas and discuss collaboration opportunities. Representatives of CUHK included Professor Alan KL Chan, Acting President of CUHK; Professor Chan Wai Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); Professor Song Chunshan, Faculty Dean of Science; Professor Anthony So, Dean of Graduation School; Professor Wong Kam Fai, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of Faculty of Engineering; Professor Zhang Jian, Acting Chairman of Department of Chinese Language and Literature; Professor Yip Choy Yin Virginia, Director of CUHK–PKU Joint Research Centre for Language and Human Complexity; Professor Mok Pik Ki Peggy, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. PKU delegation comprised Professor Gong Qi-Huang, President; Professor Wang Bo, Vice-President cum Provost; Professor Jiang Guohua, Vice-President and Assistant Dean of Graduate School; Professor Yan Jirong, Dean of School of Government; Professor Hu Zhenjiang, School Dean of Computer Science; Professor Du Xiaoqin, Head of Department of Chinese Language and Culture; Professor Chen Xing, Head of College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering; Ms. Li Yun and Ms. Zhou Jing, Director and Assistant Director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs.
Both parties reviewed the major collaborative initiatives and discussions were held to strengthen the cooperation in education programs, student interflow activities, and research projects. New plans were devised based on existing academic linkages. Since signing the exchange agreement in 1985, CUHK and PKU have achieved fruitful results in research and development, executive training, and student exchange. The two universities have established the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of High-Confidence Software Technology and partnered to build up the Joint Research Centre for Language and Human Complexity. In early 2019, CUHK and PKU signed a cooperation agreement on undergraduate dual-degree programmes. The first batch of students started their studies in 2019-2020 which further strengthens joint efforts to cultivate talents in both regions.
CUHK Meets with CAS Delegation
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the delegation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on 8 March. Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); and Ms. Wing Wong, Directory of China Engagement, met with the delegation to review collaboration projects and devise further plans. The CAS delegation members included Mr. Liu Wei-Song, Director of the International Cooperation Bureau; Ms. Li Fang-Fang, Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office; Mr. Tian Tian, Deputy Director of the Finance and Integrated Management Department of Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation; Ms. Kuang Yong-Zhen, Director of International Cooperation Office of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology; and Mr. Gong Ju-Cheng, Deputy Director of Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Health, Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation. After the meeting, the delegation visited the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science of CUHK and had a discussion meeting with the director of the Institute Professor Kwan Mei Po.
CUHK has been in close collaboration with CAS in academic exchange and research collaboration since the partnership establishment in 1986. Apart from the state key laboratories and joint laboratories, the two parties joined hands with Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish SIAT in February 2006. CUHK has been organizing the CAS Academicians Visit Programme cum Lecture Series annually since 2007. CUHK-CAS Partnership Steering Committee was established in 2014 to forge an effective and sustainable relationship.
CUHK Meets Delegation of HUST
Professor Chan Wai Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) welcomed the delegation of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on 20 February. He was accompanied by Professor Samuel Wong, Director of The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, and other CUHK members. Both sides exchanged views on deepening collaboration in public health and energy photonics.
Representatives of HUST included Professor Chen Jian-Guo, Vice-President; Ms. Chen Jie and Mr. Sheng Jing-Bo, Director and Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office; Professor Feng Zhan-Chun, Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Management; and Professor Wang Lei, Professor of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and Director of Energy Photonics Functional Laboratory. Participants conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as joint student supervision, joint research establishment, and faculty exchanges to develop collaborative plans.
Soochow University Visits CUHK to Renew Collaboration
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the delegation of Soochow University on 23 February to discuss collaboration plans. Representatives of CUHK included Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); Professor Wong Suk-Ying, Master of CW Chu College; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. Soochow University members comprised Professor Li Xiao-Feng, Vice-President; Professor He Le, Director of the Internal Cooperation Office and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office; Professor Zhang Jinping, Dean of Graduate School. Professor Chan and Professor Li renewed the academic exchange agreement on behalf of CUHK and Soochow University at the meeting, indicating the continuous efforts to foster collaborations and exchanges between the two universities.
CUHK Meets with Tongji University Delegation
The delegation of Tongji University visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 2 March to discuss collaboration plans. The Tongji delegates included Professor Lou Yong-Qi, Vice-President; Ms. Zheng Xiao-Lei, Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office; Professor Liu Chun, Assistant Dean of Graduate School; Professor Chen Yu-Guang, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate School; Professor Du Yu-Chuan, Assistant Director of Office of Research and Administration; Professor He Bin, Executive Director of Shanghai Autonomous Intelligent Unmanned System Science Center; Professor Liu Fang, Assistant Dean of College of Civil Engineering; Professor Wang Hongwei, Assistant Dean of School of Economics & Management; Professor Zhang Jian-Tong, Professor of School of Economics & Management.
The delegation was received by CUHK members including Professor Chan Wai-Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development); Professor Chen Ben-Mei and Professor Zhang Li, Professors of Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering; and Professor Kevin Au, Department of Management. Both sides explored collaboration plans riding on the foundation of academic exchanges in specific research area. After the meeting, the delegation visited the laboratories of Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering to get to know the operation and project developments. Discussions were held on talent training and joint initiatives to further collaborative efforts.
CUHK Receives Delegation of Guangzhou Nansha Development Area
Prof. Daniel Lee, Associate Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the delegation of Guangzhou Nansha Development Area on 21 February. The delegates were introduced to the recent development of CUHK and visited Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics (HKCLR) after the meeting. CUHK representatives joining the interflow were Professor Liu Yun Hui, Director of HKCLR and Choh Ming Li Professor of Mechanical and Automation Engineering of CUHK; and Professor Gu Shen Linda, School of Biomedical Sciences. Delegation members of Guangzhou Nansha Development Area included Mr. Xie Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee; Mr. Zhong Wei-Bin, Director of Science and Technology Bureau; Mr. Zheng Hui-Rong, Director of Hong Kong and Macau Office; and Mr. Huang Qing-Nan, Chairman of Guangzhou Association for Science & Technology.
In recent years, CUHK has been promoting cooperation and exchanges with Nansha District. In July 2022, CUHK and the secretariat of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum jointly organized the 2022 Greater Bay Area Science Forum Distinguished Lectures. This event is a response to the “Nansha Plan” to be based in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) in collaboration with Hong Kong and Macao as a platform to promote the development of scientific and technological innovations and to facilitate the exchange of young talents in GBA. In December 2022, CUHK signed an agreement with Fudan University’s Greater Bay Area Institute of Precision Medicine (Guangzhou), which was established by the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, the Management Committee of Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone and Fudan University. The Faculty of Medicine of CUHK is in discussion with the Nansha District People’s Government on the collaboration in Guangzhou-Hong Kong integrated medical development in the region.
